Last updated: June 2, 2026
The Tag feature requires customization to be enabled before configurations and automated calculations can be used. Refer to the API documentation for instructions on enabling this functionality.
Overview
Tagging enables structured payroll allocation and supports accurate financial reporting. Tag groups and tags can be used to categorize payroll costs by departments, projects, locations, or other organizational tracking dimensions.
This article outlines the process for:
Creating tag groups
Creating tags
Configuring accounting code rules
Assigning tags to work assignments
Overriding tags at the payroll line item level
Proper configuration helps ensure payroll data is categorized correctly and reflected accurately in journal entries.
Coming Soon
An article covering how to import tags through the accounting integration will be added in a future update.
How To in the Partner Portal
Before You Begin
Tagging must be enabled within the Partner Portal before setup can begin.
Enable Tagging
Navigate to Partner Feature Configuration.
Ensure the Tagging feature is enabled.
It is also recommended to review the article 📄 Understanding the Tags Featurefor additional background on tagging functionality and allocation behaviour.
Step 1: Create Tag Groups
Tag groups define the categories used for payroll tracking and reporting, such as:
Department
Project
Location
Cost Centre
Create a Tag Group
Navigate to:
Business Entity > Accounting > Tracking Dimensions
Select Create Tracking Dimension.
Complete the following fields:
Field | Description |
|---|---|
Label | Name of the tag group (example: Department) |
Label Translations | Optional translated label |
Description | Optional internal description |
Description Translation | Optional translated description |
Journal Entry Dimension | Enable if the tag group should appear in journal entries |
Component Locked | Prevents edits to the component when enabled |
Select Create Tracking Dimension to save the tag group.
Step 2: Create Tags
After creating the tag group, individual tags can be added within the group.
Examples:
Engineering
Sales
Operations
Project Alpha
Create Tags
Open the applicable tag group.
Select Create Tags.
Complete the following fields:
Field | Description |
|---|---|
Label | Name of the tag |
Description | Optional internal description |
Save the tag.
Repeat the process as needed to create additional tags within the group.
Step 3: Configure Accounting Code Rules
Accounting code rules map tags to accounting codes to ensure journal entries are generated correctly.
Create an Accounting Code Rule
Navigate to Accounting Code Rules.
Select Create Accounting Code Rule.
Configure the following:
Field | Description |
|---|---|
Tag Group | Select the applicable tag group |
Type | Select the applicable rule type |
Business Preset | Optional business preset selection |
Expense Accounting Code | Applicable expense account mapping |
Liability Accounting Code | Applicable liability account mapping |
Save the accounting code rule.
This configuration is required for payroll tagging data to flow properly into accounting and journal entry reporting.
Step 4: Assign Tags to Work Assignments
Tags are assigned at the work assignment level to define default payroll allocations.
Assign Tags to a Work Assignment
Navigate to the employee’s work assignment.
Select the pencil icon to enter the edit interface
Assign the applicable tags under Tag Assignment
Define the allocation ratio.
The allocation ratio determines how payroll costs are distributed by default during payroll processing.
Step 5: Override Tags at the Payroll Line Item Level (Optional)
If required, tags can be overridden on individual payroll line items.
This functionality is commonly used for:
Bonuses
Temporary project allocations
One-time adjustments
Special payroll distributions
Line item overrides temporarily replace the default work assignment allocation for the affected payroll item only.

Accounting code rules should be configured prior to payroll processing to ensure proper journal entry mapping.
Tags may be assigned at both the work assignment and payroll line item levels.
Allocation ratios determine how payroll expenses are distributed across tags.
Important Considerations
Best Practices
Use clear and consistent naming conventions for all tag groups and tags.
Avoid duplicate or overlapping tags.
Define primary tracking dimensions early in the implementation process.
Regularly review accounting code rules to ensure mappings remain accurate.
